Although Mary (played by Isabelle Huppert) is now a mother of two, her lack of formal education in childhood has left her mentally as naive as a child. Mary's husband, Paul (played by François Cluzet), is a soldier who was sent to the front lines amidst the turmoil and has yet to return, leaving his wife and children to live in poverty and hardship. Mary helps a woman with an abortion and discovers an opportunity; in that era, abortion was illegal and assisting with it was a capital offense, yet pressed by life's challenges and the temptation of money, Mary embarked on this illegal and dangerous work. By chance, Mary meets a man named Lucien (played by Nils Tavernier), and they fall in love at first sight, beginning a sinful romance. Unexpectedly, Paul, upon his return, uncovers their affair and in his anger, reports all of Mary's actions to the police, leading Mary to face a death sentence.
