A posthumous work of Liu Bieqian, where his brushwork reaches fruition. An orphan girl wants to follow in her uncle's footsteps and become a plumber, but she feels out of place in British society, which emphasizes class distinction and gender roles. A Polish poet who escaped the clutches of the Nazis discovers her as if they are kindred spirits, but she then goes to work as a maid, intending to marry into a typical gentleman's household like a normal person. After being in America for over twenty years, Liu Bieqian finally summarizes her situation. In the film, despite the ludicrousness of both the nobility and the servants, their faces are not repulsive but rather bear traces of humanity, perhaps representing Liu Bieqian's highest level of brushwork. Moreover, it seems that these brushstrokes are embodied in the two protagonists, achieving a spontaneous connection with the audience's hearts. Looking back today, this is his most European work; the close relative is Renoir. Source: 28th HKIFF
