After World War II, Leah (Ingrid Bergman) is targeted by the FBI as the daughter of a war criminal. Exploiting her guilt over her father's crimes and his connections within the Nazi regime, she is enlisted to investigate Nazi leader Chebas (Claude Rains) in depth, gathering intelligence to convict him. Federal agent Dio (Cary Grant) falls deeply in love with this charming woman during their collaboration. However, their romance must be subordinated to national interests, leading him to set aside his feelings and painfully allow Leah to become Chebas's woman. While deeply disappointed, Leah also acts as a spy in Chebas's life, finding herself in a perilous situation.
When Leah finally uncovers crucial information about Chebas, she is unexpectedly discovered by him. However, Chebas also worries about the repercussions; to eliminate Leah, he devises a subtle plan. Leah's circumstances become dire, and the spy plot teeters on a knife's edge.
