Slubov is a member of the secret police "Cheka," established by Lenin in Soviet Russia. They broadly arrested intellectuals, nobles, Jews, clergy, and their families, conducting interrogations in one minute, trials in ten seconds, and executing them immediately after. In the basement of the Cheka, prisoners were lined up in groups of five, completely naked and facing a wooden door, where they were executed en masse. No one recorded their last words, there were no witnesses, only nameless corpses. Day after day, illegal trials, executions, and the loading of bodies operated like an assembly line. Slubov is a cold-hearted sexual pervert but also a profound thinker who loathes his past friends and family. As he tries to explore the purpose of the revolution and the meaning of the Cheka's existence, he descends into madness.
