Officer John Hobbes (Denzel Washington) has recently arrested a murderer named Reese, who, apart from saying a few strange words and leaving a cryptic message before his execution, seems unremarkable. However, Hobbes quickly discovers that Reese's message points to a police officer, Rob Milan, who committed suicide thirty years ago. Meanwhile, a series of linked murders occur, with the killer using identical methods, and astonishingly, each victim is a suspect from the previous case. Hobbes visits Rob's daughter, Gretchen, who advises him to abandon the investigation. Reese's message is eventually deciphered; he threatened Hobbes using an ancient Syrian language. Hobbes's persistence leads to further discoveries, revealing that Rob and the recent murder victims may all be connected to a malevolent spirit known as "Asasao," which can possess humans to commit evil acts, making Hobbes's pursuit of the killer increasingly difficult. How will this battle between man and evil spirit conclude?
