Small employee Jian Sheng (played by Tony Leung) is obsessed with gambling in hopes of making a fortune overnight, but ends up deep in debt. His wife Mei Feng (played by Brigitte Lin) embezzles public funds to help her husband pay off the debts. To fill the gap in the public funds, Jian Sheng and Mei Feng go to Thailand to borrow money from relatives. On the way back, Mei Feng accidentally falls into the sea, and Jian Sheng, harboring malicious intent, chooses not to save her. The police ultimately conclude that Mei Feng committed suicide out of guilt. Jian Sheng begins a new life, cunningly gaining the favor of the company's chairman and his daughter's affection, and his career starts to flourish. Mei Feng, having survived the fall, is disfigured. With the help of her friend Shan Shan, she successfully undergoes cosmetic surgery. Faced with her husband's beastly behavior, Mei Feng begins her revenge plan.
