In a small city in Hokkaido, a government worker named Otsu (played by Tetsuji Tamayama) is heading deep into the dense forest with colleagues. Recently, an abandoned car was discovered here, containing the bones of a middle-aged man and a dog. There are no documents inside or outside the car to prove the man's identity, aside from a few shopping receipts. Examination of the bones reveals that the dog survived the man by nearly six months after his death. Curious about the man's story, Otsu, who has experience with dogs from his childhood, decides to investigate the starting point of the deceased's journey—Tokyo—and pays for the trip himself. Along the way, he picks up a local girl, Yuki (played by Kaho Kawashima), who secretly ran away to audition in Tokyo. The two follow the clues from the shopping receipts in search of the middle-aged man "Maeda" (played by Toshiyuki Nishida) and his beloved dog, Happy. Through their exploration, they gradually piece together the ordinary yet lonely life of Mr. Maeda... This film is adapted from the manga of the same name by Takashi Murakami.
