In the final stages of World War II, the defeat of the Axis powers was evident, and Japan, a member of the "Evil Axis," faced an immense crisis. The Pacific battlefield suffered successive losses, and two atomic bombs further shattered the psychological defenses of the Japanese people. At this moment, Emperor Hirohito (played by Issey Ogata), the supreme commander of Japan, was confronted with a painful decision. The dark clouds loomed over the city, and this small-statured man had an inner world that no one could approach... This film is the third installment in Russian director Alexander Sokurov's "Rulers of the 20th Century Trilogy," which took a total of 8 years to produce. It was awarded Best Film at the 2005 Yerevan International Film Festival in Armenia.
