In 1893, after the death of her mother, Gabrielle Chanel's wine merchant father abandoned her and her sister Antoine at the Aubaz Orphanage. As adults, Chanel (played by Audrey Tautou) and Antoine (played by Marie Gillain) made a living through sewing and singing in bars. Chanel met French millionaire Étienne Balsan (played by Benoît Poelvoorde) through the song "Little Dog Coco," becoming one of his many mistresses. At Balsan's castle, Chanel began making women's hats and became friends with actress Émilienne (played by Emmanuelle Devos).
