Most of the film features a struggle among three forces, pulling and counterbalancing each other. One side is Ye Qiu (played by Tony Leung). He was once a fierce beast in the underworld, but after 8 years in prison, he now only wishes to run a legitimate business, pursue grand ambitions, and clear his background. However, it seems that his determination is not understood by others. The other side is Ghost Boy (played by Ronald Cheng). He enjoys the power of the underworld similar to Ye Qiu's past and fails to look back, viewing Ye Qiu as a threat. Meanwhile, Inspector Song Guoming (played by Anthony Wong) is always waiting for an opportunity to capture both sides together. Ghost Boy uses Ye Qiu's beloved blind girl (played by Huo Siyan) as bait to force him into a deal. Inspector Song Guoming also begins to stir upon hearing the news. However, it is in this battle that he gradually realizes Ye Qiu's heartfelt struggles, while Ye Qiu inspires Ghost Boy to have new insights into his life in the underworld.
