Lao Zhao (played by Zhao Benshan) is a farmer in his fifties who goes to work in Shenzhen. After his friend Lao Liu dies, he has no choice but to embark on a journey to bring his friend's body home for burial. He first disguises Lao Liu as a drunken man to board a long-distance bus but unfortunately encounters robbers (played by Guo Degang and others) along the way. After saving the passengers' money, he ends up forcing them off the bus.
With no other option, Lao Zhao has to hitch a ride on the road and spends the night in a hotel, only to have his money stolen. He goes to someone else's (played by Wu Ma) funeral to mourn and gets food to eat... Along the way, Lao Zhao meets various kinds of Chinese people. Just as the goal is in sight, he collapses from exhaustion and wakes up in a hospital where the police inform him that the body must be cremated according to regulations.
Lao Zhao returns to his hometown with Lao Liu's ashes, only to find that it has been demolished. A message from Lao Liu's son is written on the door.
