Formerly glamorous actress Norma (Gloria Swanson) is nearing 50, and her once radiant beauty is fading in the decaying mansion where she lives, with only her friend Max (Erich von Stroheim) by her side. She hasn't given up on her dreams of regaining fame; the script for "Salome" is waiting to be written, and the fallen screenwriter Joe (William Holden), who has fled here to escape debts, is the perfect candidate for this project. Norma takes him in, providing a comfortable environment for him to write, and gradually falls for him. However, Joe cannot accept this woman whose youth has faded. He rejects her and turns to plan a new script with another beautiful woman, with whom he falls in love and engages passionately.
When Norma learns of Joe's "betrayal," she humbly begs him, but cannot sway his increasingly distant heart. Norma ultimately raises a gun to shoot Joe as he prepares to leave.
