One morning, a mummified female corpse appeared in the ditch of a village. Under police investigation, the wandering years of the deceased, Mona (played by Sandrine Bonnaire), were uncovered. She camped out with a large backpack, living with a down-and-out vagabond in a house, smoking and sleeping together. An elderly maid named Yulande envied the free-spirited state of Mona and the vagabond, feeling dissatisfied with her rough boyfriend, Paul. One night, Paul broke in and knocked the vagabond unconscious, after which Mona left without a word. She then met a couple who were shepherding; they offered her land and shelter, hoping she would work hard to lead a calm and stable life. Mona, unimpressed, resumed her journey and hitchhiked, meeting Randir, who worked in tree studies. After providing her with brief help, they went their separate ways. Later, she met a worker named Az, who was pruning grape branches. No one knows where Mona's wandering will take her...
