In a small town in southern Italy, a quirky little boy named Toto (played by Salvatore Cascio) loves watching movies and is particularly fascinated by the projectionist Alfredo (played by Philippe Noiret). They become close friends across generations, finding joy in the reels of film that reflect Toto's childhood. Alfredo, the kind-hearted projectionist, organizes an outdoor film screening, but the film catches fire. Toto rescues Alfredo from the flames, but as a result, Alfredo goes blind. Toto becomes the only person in town who can operate the projector, taking over Alfredo's role as the town's projectionist. As Toto (played by Marco Leonardi) grows up, he falls in love with Elena (played by Agrippina Nanà), the banker's daughter. The innocent emotions of first love are beautiful as paradise, but their vows are interrupted by Elena's father's opposition. Toto goes to serve in the military, while Elena goes to university. Heartbroken, Toto, encouraged by Alfredo, leaves the town to pursue his dreams… Thirty years later, after Alfredo's death, Toto has become a successful director. He returns to his hometown and sees the dilapidated Cinema Paradiso, reminiscing about the past with deep emotion.
