Mariette (played by Kay Francis) is a wealthy and flirtatious beautiful widow, running a company. By chance, she meets a man named Rivele (played by Herbert Marshall). Rivele is charming and dapper, and Mariette is quickly enchanted by his charm, hiring him as her personal secretary, which is exactly what Rivele dreams of. It turns out that Rivele is an alias; this suave man is actually an international thief. He teams up with his former lover, Lily (played by Miriam Hopkins), to scheme to take Mariette's wealth for themselves. The company chairman, Adolphe (played by C. Aubrey Smith), senses Rivele's plot and informs Mariette, but she does not believe his advice, and Rivele's scheme is about to succeed.
