Nikander (Matti Pellonpää), a garbage truck driver for a sanitation company, has an old colleague who plans to raise funds to establish his own sanitation company and invites Nikander to invest his skills. However, the old colleague suddenly falls ill and dies, leaving Nikander's life stagnant once again. Frustrated, Nikander turns to alcohol and meets his future colleague Mikala while being detained. Mikala occasionally annoys Nikander by interfering in his secret pursuit of supermarket cashier Ilona (Kati Outinen), but he remains Nikander's most reliable friend. In an act of revenge against the supermarket manager for stealing a cash box, Ilona finds a new job at a clothing store with Nikander's help. The clothing store manager gets caught up in the relationship between Nikander and Ilona, but Nikander ultimately wins back his lover. This film won the Best Film Award at the 1987 Jussi Awards in Finland. It is the first film in director Aki Kaurismäki's proletariat trilogy.
