In the 1990s, Beijing. Chen Chen (played by Shi Chen) lives with his grandfather (played by Li Ding) while his parents work abroad. His grandfather spent his whole life working in the postal service and, after retirement, lives alone with his grandson. One day, the grandfather and grandson tie a letter from a deceased recipient to a kite and release it into the sky. The grandfather tells Chen Chen that the recipient will receive it in heaven. Soon, Chen Chen's mother (played by Xiao Xiong) returns from abroad. Disapproving of her father-in-law's indulgence towards Chen Chen, she assigns him daily English and piano lessons, disrupting their previous calm life, leading the grandfather to move back to his old home. Chen Chen misses his grandfather day and night, despising the English and piano and crying uncontrollably. His mother starts to reflect on this situation. On the grandfather's birthday, Chen Chen and his good friend Lin Lin bring a birthday card to celebrate. The grandfather takes them out to fly kites, but after a long day of joy and laughter from the children, the grandfather sadly "falls asleep" forever... The film received the International Youth and Children's Film Center Award at the 43rd Berlin International Film Festival, the Best Film Award at the 10th Chicago Children's Film Festival in the USA, the Best Film Award at the 7th Children's Film Festival in the Netherlands, and the Best Director Golden Butterfly Award at the 25th Isfahan International Children's Film Festival in Iran.
