Linda (Melanie Griffith) acquired fluent German due to her unique childhood experiences, but speaking German is forbidden in her life due to the tense wartime situation. During a job interview, Linda inadvertently revealed her impressive language talent, at which point her boss, Ed (Michael Douglas), needed a German-speaking secretary, making Linda the perfect choice. As time passed, Linda and Ed's relationship grew closer, and the outbreak of war made Linda realize that Ed, who seemed to be in business, was actually an intelligence officer, and she had hopelessly fallen in love with him. The war separated the lovers, after which Linda became Ed's capable subordinate once again. During a dangerous mission that required infiltrating Germany, Linda volunteered, and Ed agreed she must leave Germany in a week; however, Linda failed to keep the appointment.
