In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, the closure of the gypsum plant, a crucial economic pillar in the small town of Empire, Nevada, left the town deserted, leading to the cancellation of its zip code. After her husband's death, Fern (played by Frances McDormand), who had spent nearly her entire life in Empire, struggles to make ends meet. To minimize her living costs, she moves her modest belongings into a converted van and embarks on a road life, working while traveling west. She takes on temporary jobs on an Amazon assembly line, at a café in an amusement park, and in a national forest. Along the way, she encounters and befriends many fellow van dwellers, helping each other and forming bonds of friendship.
