A group of people from different regions and backgrounds in Mainland China come to Hong Kong after 1997, each with their own concerns. The realities of life push them to the margins of the city, rendering them as outcasts of Hong Kong, witnessing prosperity that feels like an unattainable beautiful dream. Ah Ying (Wang Ning) is a prostitute with a short-term passport, deeply entrenched in memories of her boyfriend who could have served as a soldier in Hong Kong but unfortunately died. She views prostitution as a quick way to make money. Ah Yan (Lü Liping) was once a dance teacher, but a car accident caused her to lose the ability to dance and her son. After arriving in Hong Kong, she can only work as an elevator girl in a restaurant, locking herself away due to the contrast between her former glory and her current misery. Ah Jian (Tony Leung) is Ah Yan's cohabiting boyfriend, making a living by running a pornographic video store. Life for him is merely about passing the time, so being with Ah Yan is just a means of finding some companionship. "Pork Ribs Boy" (Zhou Zhisheng) is an elevator repairman, introverted and silent, and the monotony of life leads him to immerse himself in radio call-ins and erotic venues, with nothing else to engage in.
