There is an elephant at the Manzhouli Zoo that sits there every day. A boy stepping up for his friend, a bully brother avenging his younger sibling, a girl trapped in a prison of despair, all stuck in the cracks of a dark world yet struggling to see the elephant. On a bleak winter day, desperate figures collide in asymmetrical and unbalanced imagery, bursting forth the oppressive gloom, spreading wildly in a low-budget production with rough settings and hazy lighting. The author's debut work, directed by Hu Bo (pen name Hu Qian), is marked by youthful simplicity and shocking emotion, earning recognition at the Berlin Film Festival by being shortlisted for the Forum section, but it remains a lost puzzle piece that cannot fit into the harmonious mainstream. The inability to see the elephant is a shared fate, and Hu Bo’s sudden passing has become a regret for this generation.
