During World War II, everyone in the German POW camp longed for freedom. American soldier Hilts (played by Steve McQueen) began planning an escape from the moment he entered the camp. Although his numerous attempts to escape ended in failure, Hilts never gave up. This time, he and British officer Roger planned to secretly dig a tunnel to help 250 men escape. Everyone contributed to this plan: some were responsible for making civilian clothes for the escape, others for creating fake documents, and some for stockpiling food. However, on the day their tunnel was completed, it was discovered by the Germans. As the escape date approached, Hilts and the others began a new round of digging work.
