Michèle (Juliette Binoche) is a wealthy young woman, but she is not happy. After a breakup, she develops an eye condition, and in her low spirits, she decides to wander the outside world. She enjoys painting and meets Alex (Denis Lavant), who has a broken leg, and captures his twitching face on canvas. Klaus is a homeless man with nothing, yet he falls in love with Michèle. The two begin a passionate romance, warming and healing each other while wandering. Michèle's vision slowly deteriorates, and her wish is to see the paintings in a museum before going blind. Posters of Michèle’s family searching for her are plastered all over the streets, and Alex feels that Michèle is about to leave him, filling him with sadness. He shoots his own finger to express his pain, crazily burning the missing person notices, yet he cannot hold onto a love that is about to vanish. Nevertheless, Michèle ultimately decides to break up and returns to her previous life. Later, on a snowy Christmas night, Michèle finally reunites with Alex under the dazzling fireworks on the Seine River.
