"The First Life" depicts a Ming Dynasty Jingyiwei expert assigned to escort a government official's daughter to the capital to marry the right deputy commander of the Jingyiwei as a concubine. Along the way, seeking to possess the beauty for himself, he murders all accompanying personnel and abducts her to hide in the mountains. The beauty's fiancé, a leader of the righteous army, trails them to rescue his fiancée. After a fierce battle in the mountains, the Jingyiwei is blinded, while both the beauty and her fiancé fall victim to his hands. "The Second Life" describes the early Republic era, where a struggling opera troupe faces difficulties and receives substantial help from a wealthy young man. He and the troupe's leading actress feel a mysterious connection at first sight. The two fall in love instantly and pledge themselves to each other. However, the young man's mother staunchly opposes him marrying an actress. The actress’s senior has secretly loved her for years; out of jealousy for her relationship with the young man, he accidentally kills her during a performance of "Killing with Sorrow on the Building." "The Third Life" narrates a master and his brother, a medium, living in Penghu Island. A modern dance artist arrives in a fishing village in Penghu and meets the medium by chance; they fall in love at first sight. The artist wants to take the medium to Taipei for a new life. The medium is caught between traditional forces and modern thoughts, torn between family ties and romantic love. Ultimately, during a ritual, the medium refuses to climb the knife ladder. The master, out of desperation, climbs it himself but tragically loses his footing and dies. The medium and the artist finally become husband and wife.
