After studying in college for just six months, Song Lian (Gong Li) is forced by her money-hungry mother to marry into the Chen family, becoming the fourth concubine of the master. The Chen household has an old custom where the concubines must stand in front of their rooms in the evening, waiting for the red lanterns sent by the servants, signifying the master’s “visit.” At first, as the “newcomer,” Song Lian receives the most favor from the master, but this also leads to her being bullied by the other three concubines, especially the two-faced Second Concubine (Cao Cuifen). Due to her inexperience and rebellious nature, Song Lian is eager to prove herself and become a favorite of the master again, but her scheme is seen through, leading to a tragic downfall at the hands of the Second Concubine. The experiences of the Third Concubine (He Saifei), though different from Song Lian’s, also ultimately lead to a fate they cannot escape.
