The aging botanist, Makino Shukichi (played by Ichiro Sugai), and his family reside in the Kitakamakura area. His eldest son, Koichi (played by Tomoko Kasai), is a doctor at a hospital in Tokyo, and his daughter, Noriko (played by Setsuko Hara), works at a trading company in Marunouchi, Tokyo, serving as a secretary to manager Sadao Satake (played by Shuji Sano). Noriko, a young and attractive woman, is of marriable age, and her friends have all started families, yet she remains single. Her parents and brother are invested in her marriage prospects, as is Manager Satake, who introduces her to a prestigious senior, Manago. However, Noriko is drawn to her brother’s colleague, Kenji Yabe (played by Hiroshi Nibunyan), a widower with a three-year-old daughter and financial struggles... This film won four awards at the 1952 Blue Ribbon Awards: Best Actress (Setsuko Hara), Best Cinematography, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress (Haruko Sugimura); it was also named Best Film by the 1952 Film Critics, and won Best Actress and Best Film from the 1952 Mainichi Film Awards.
