Synopsis: In the mid-19th century, a young couple, Kristina and Karl Oscar, lived in a small rural community in Smaland, southern Sweden. They barely managed to survive on a small piece of barren land. Times were tough, people faced harsh weather, and harvests were drastically reduced, leading to desolation. The couple's first child died from hunger after stealing food. This famine, along with the child's death, led the mother to accept the father's decision to emigrate to America. They set off in company with another family escaping religious persecution and a man fleeing an abusive wife. The remainder of the film depicts their arduous journey aboard a swaying ship as they cross the Atlantic and venture inland, ultimately arriving in present-day Minnesota, USA. The entire migration took 10 weeks. In Minnesota, these survivors will begin their new lives in this new world... This film is an epic depicting the emigration of Nordic people to America, featuring long shots and spectacular natural landscapes. The shadow of "The Emigrants" can be seen in "The Conqueror Pål." Starring Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann, it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.
