The story takes place in the town of Passaic, Georgia, where the local church choir is about to participate in a national competition called "Joyful Noise." However, just at this critical moment, the choir's music director suddenly dies, and the entire choir is on the verge of collapse without their leader. The church appoints a woman named Rose (played by Queen Latifah) as the new music director. Rose is very traditional and wants everything to follow the established norms, but the late director's widow, Violet (played by Dolly Parton), does not agree; she believes the choir should be led by her and should try a new style. Bernard (played by Kris Kristofferson), Violet’s grandson, falls in love with Rose’s daughter, Olivia (played by Keke Palmer), which further intensifies the conflict between the two women.
