Walt (Tom Hanks) is a producer who promises his daughter Lillian (Dendrie Taylor) that he will bring the wonderful story of her favorite novel, "Mary Poppins," to the screen so that more people can experience its joy and beauty. To acquire the rights to the novel, Walt approaches the original author, Travers (Emma Thompson). What Walt doesn't expect is that no amount of flattery will persuade the stubborn and willful writer. Ultimately, it is the decline in sales of the novel that leads Travers to reluctantly agree to Walt's request. However, for Walt, securing the adaptation rights is just the beginning of a great ordeal; by the time the "Mary Poppins" film finally premieres, two decades have passed.
