In the 15th year of the Chongzhen era of the Ming Dynasty, with internal and external troubles, General Sun Chuanting (played by Dai Liren) is urgently appointed to lead his wife Feng (played by Feng Bo) to Tongguan to resist the army of Li Zicheng. Meanwhile, the wandering doctor Wu Youke (played by Feng Yuanzheng), with a heart for saving the world, arrives in Tongguan to visit his master—Pharmacy Leader Zhao Chuan (played by Qian Xuega). With a great enemy at hand, soldiers in Sun Chuanting's army suffer from a strange illness, while they also face pressure from Emperor Chongzhen (played by Yu Shaoqun) to mobilize troops and selfish profiteering from local gentry like Gu Qingyuan (played by Ma Jingwu). Zhao Chuan sacrifices himself due to ineffective rescue efforts, and in a time of crisis, Wu Youke steps up, using an unusual treatment method that resonates with Sun Chuanting. In the end, the plague is finally brought under control, but whether the nation's ills can be cured by war remains uncertain for both Wu Youke and Sun Chuanting. The theme song of this film is performed by Bossa Nova queen Lisa Ono, marking her first time interpreting her own songs in Chinese.
