The story takes place in Northeast China during the September 18 Incident. Little Zi's father (Lu Qiushi) has known the Japanese "merchant" Kawashima (Tsuji Yuhi) for over a decade. After the incident occurs, Kawashima suddenly turns against him, leaving Little Zi's father in shock. Little Zi's father is a wealthy landowner in Xitai Village, owning all the land for a hundred miles around. His biggest regret is not having a son to carry on the family name, so when he finally has a daughter in his old age, he names her Little Zi (Liang Siqi). The family's hired hand has a son named Chunyang (Zhou Hongsai), who is specifically employed to play with Little Zi.
