A little girl named Fern has a mother pig who gives birth to a litter of 11 piglets in the spring. The mother pig only has ten teats, and the weakest piglet can't get any milk, so Fern's father prepares to kill it. Fern saves the piglet and names it Wilbur, personally taking care of it. As Wilbur grows, Fern can no longer keep him at home, so she has to send him to her uncle's farm next door to continue raising him. Wilbur is innocent and carefree, and he quickly makes good friends with the other animals on the farm because of his enthusiastic and cheerful personality. The happy times soon pass, and Wilbur learns from the other animals that the piglets born in spring will be slaughtered for smoked meat before Christmas.
