In the southern city of Beijing, there is a hutong called Sunset Street, where five or six ordinary families live in a siheyuan. Their demands for life are quite simple. Unemployed youth Shitou (played by Chi Zhiqiang) just wants to find a job to earn some money to buy clothes for his widowed mother. Retired worker Zheng Wanquan (played by Gan Shaokang) wants to organize unemployed youth to set up a large cooperative to provide more people with the nearly lost traditional Beijing-style old tofu. His idea gets a positive response from Shitou and others, who all come up with suggestions and ways to help, busy with getting licenses and choosing locations. Excellent teacher Wang Pu (played by Jiang Shui) hopes to have a desk for marking assignments. Meanwhile, Na (played by Liu Yan), who dreams of getting married abroad, and her "unpopular" father Li Pengfei (played by Li Ding) have also been deceived by others. Old Sun (played by Chen Qiang) spends his days lost in playing cards and neglecting his management of his son (played by Chen Peisi). As time passes, people's perspectives begin to change, and their individual wishes gradually come true...
