In August 1944, on the eve of the liberation of Paris, German military commander von Choltitz was ordered to destroy all of Paris's landmarks. The Swedish ambassador Raoul Nordling entered his office, and during their conversation over drinks, they engaged in a battle of wits and exchanged heartfelt sentiments, ultimately leading to the cancellation of the destruction of Paris.
