Three siblings gather in the countryside to celebrate their mother Hélène's (played by Edith Scob) seventy-fifth birthday, enjoying a harmonious family reunion with three generations present. After dinner, however, the mother brings up the topic of how to manage her inheritance after her death to her eldest son Frédéric (played by Charles Berling), who is a bit annoyed and reluctant to discuss it. Nevertheless, Hélène insists on arranging the fate of her belongings, telling her son that the ancestral home will be sold and asking how to handle the artworks of her respected uncle and painter Paul. Frédéric insists that the house should be preserved for the children to inherit. A few months later, Hélène passes away. Frédéric, who has been living and working in Paris, hopes to keep the ancestral home. However, his brother Jérémie (played by Jérémie Rénier), who is about to move to China for work, and his sister Adrienne (played by Juliette Binoche), who is about to marry and start a family in New York, agree to sell the house since they won’t be returning to Paris. Everything turns out just as their mother said. Frédéric reluctantly accepts and begins to deal with the affairs. In the final month before the house is sold, Frédéric's children throw a grand party in the ancestral home, where youth thrives, and the connection to their ancestors may continue in another way.
