At the beginning of the new semester, teachers and students return to an ordinary community school. François Marin (played by François Bégaudeau), the French teacher and homeroom teacher, continues to teach in a frank yet somewhat argumentative manner to a new class of first-year students. This group of students, around 14 years old, is lively and often challenges Marin or engages in banter and gossip during the relaxed class atmosphere, forcing Marin to repeatedly interrupt his lesson to address countless trivial issues. The school is filled with immigrant students from various countries, and the associated problems frequently manifest in classroom dynamics. Marin tries his best to help the students find self-respect, but these children, who often give their teachers headaches, seem to resist Marin's words. The verbal sparring in class and some students' antagonistic attitude towards the teacher create a tension that could erupt at any moment. The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008 and stars François Bégaudeau, who is also the author and screenwriter of the original novel.
