Maggie (Eliza Bennett) is a 12-year-old girl living in Germany, who is dependent on her father, Mo (Brendan Fraser). Her mother, Resa (Sienna Guillory), mysteriously disappeared when Maggie was just a baby. For over a decade, Mo has supported their lives through his skill in bookbinding. Maggie is curious about her mother's whereabouts, while her father remains tight-lipped. The lonely girl wanders through books daily, letting her imagination soar. One night, a dirty and evil man (Paul Bettany) breaks into their home, and Mo and his daughter hastily escape to Aunt Elinor's (Helen Mirren) house. It is here that Maggie finally learns the true reason behind her mother's disappearance and her father's magical abilities. It turns out Mo can bring characters from books into the real world through reading, and this is where the disaster begins... This film is adapted from the first book of a bestselling series by renowned German author Cornelia Funke.
