This work is adapted from the 2000 documentary of the same name, telling the story of Tammy Faye (played by Jessica Chastain) and Jim Bakker (played by Andrew Garfield), a couple who experienced great ups and downs as television evangelists. In the 1970s and 80s, Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker rose from poverty to create the world's largest religious broadcasting network at the time and a theme park, spreading messages of love, acceptance, and prosperity that earned them respect. Tammy Faye became a legend with her exaggerated eyelashes, unique singing voice, and her enthusiastic embrace of people from all walks of life. However, good times were short-lived, as financial improprieties, cunning competitors, and the eruption of scandal led to the collapse of their carefully crafted empire and the breakdown of their marriage.
