The story takes place in Normandy, France, in 1944. Jérôme (Philippe Noiret) is the male protagonist, living with his wife Marie (Catherine Deneuve) in the Lavie Castle. Jérôme and Marie lead a peaceful life, but Marie longs to leave the countryside to pursue her dreams in Paris. The stationing of the German army disrupts their lives, and Marie finds herself pursued simultaneously by a German officer, Diemonch (Pierre Brasseur), and a French spy, Jérôme (Philippe Noiret).
