The film is adapted from real historical events. The story takes place after the end of World War II, when Germany was defeated and a large number of German soldiers were captured as prisoners. During the war, the German army buried over one and a half million landmines along the west coast of Denmark, and some of the young captured German soldiers were forced to become living landmine detectors. Under the leadership of Danish officer Karl (played by Roland Møller), those young captives, still just children, began the mine-clearing operation. They used their hands, their feet, and even their lives to gradually clear the long coastline. However, when the mission was over and the surviving children joyfully believed they had finally escaped the grip of death and could return home, what awaited them was another equally cruel task.
