For 8-year-old Ishaan (played by Darsheel Safary), the world is a kaleidoscope filled with wonder and joy. He communicates with this unfamiliar world in every way he can think of, while fully enjoying the generous gifts of nature. However, to the adults around him, Ishaan is seen as a troubled child. He struggles academically, ranks low in his class, and is filled with all sorts of bewildering ideas. After causing yet another incident, his frustrated parents send him to a boarding school. Although Ishaan's new life doesn't change much, the separation from his parents leaves him feeling unhappy. At this time, a new art teacher named Nikumbh (played by Aamir Khan) enters his life. Unlike the conventional teachers he has met before, Nikumbh encourages students to retain their individuality and think freely. During the time he spends with Nikumbh, both Ishaan and Nikumbh gradually mature.
