Hong Kong girl Yuen Bair (played by 温碧霞) and Taiwanese Liao Yuping (金燕玲) and Zhao Shuzhen (蔡琴) all take fame as their life goal, but reality proves they are still quite far from the life of a star. The three meet the rice shop heir Zhang Shudong (梁朝伟) at a bar, and soon Yuen Bair develops a cohabitation relationship with him. Zhao Shuzhen's inexplicable death brings in detective Lan Zhenqiang (周润发), but his so-called investigation is merely formal. Liao Yuping finds it hard to cope with Zhao Shuzhen's departure, and her sorrow leads Zhang Shudong to comfort her physically, resulting in an unintended pregnancy. Liao Yuping's shock does not help Zhang Shudong make any decisions, and they both realize that so-called lovers only love themselves.
