In a village in Xiangnan in 1996, eleven-year-old Xiao Hao decides to travel alone to Shenzhen to visit his father, who hasn't come home for two years. Xiao Hao shares his plan with his best friends San Pang and Xiao Guang and asks for their help in raising the travel expenses. The process of raising money doesn't go smoothly, as he faces opposition from his mother and misunderstandings from the villagers. However, the stubborn Xiao Hao does not give up on his goal of going to Shenzhen. Soon, more friends join the fundraising effort, all sharing the same aim—going to Shenzhen. Innocent Xiao Hao believes that strength lies in numbers, not realizing that things are becoming increasingly complicated.
