In the 1980s, Afghanistan, a Central Asian country, fell into continuous warfare. The nation was ravaged, and its people were displaced. Relentless bombings destroyed the village and home of the elderly Dastagho (played by Abdul Ghani), resulting in the tragic loss of nearly all his relatives. Only his 5-year-old grandson Yasin (played by Jawan Mard Homayoun) survived, but he was deafened by the blasts. Despite the immense sorrow, the old man took his grandson to a distant mining area in search of his son to inform him of the family's misfortunes. The dead are gone, yet the living must still toil on the long and arduous road... Based on the novel of the same name by director Atiq Rahimi, the film won the Best Director and Jury Awards at the 2004 Bratislava International Film Festival, the Regard Original Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, the Best Director Award at the 2004 Ghent International Film Festival, the Silver Spike at the 2005 Flanders International Film Festival in Belgium, and the Best Film and Best Actor Award (Abdul Ghani) at the 6th India Asia Film Festival.
