In 1939, unemployed British youth David, like many socialist youths from around the world, joins an international organization’s militia to fight for democracy and freedom in the Spanish Civil War against Franco's dictatorial tyranny. After being wounded, David arrives in Barcelona, where the horrifying cries from the blood-soaked battlefield become an unshakable nightmare. He finds himself torn between his loyalty to socialism and his newfound love, yet his dreams of reform do not diminish even as he moves away from the frontlines, ultimately choosing to return to his comrades on the battlefield... This film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1996, and won the César Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Film at the European Film Awards.
