During the Korean War, young Yoon Deok-soo boards a rescue ship of the US military with his parents but experiences a lifelong unforgettable separation. Although the fighting has ceased, the Korean Peninsula is divided, and his hometown in the war-torn North is beyond reach. As he grows up, Deok-soo (played by Hwang Jung-min) takes on the role of the family's breadwinner in place of his father, working hard to earn money for his younger siblings' education. Far away from home, he feels a deep sense of longing and loneliness until he unexpectedly encounters a South Korean girl, Young-ji (played by Kim Yoon-jin), studying nursing in Germany, bringing bright light into his dark life.
