In Galway County, Dublin, Chief Inspector Gerry Boyle (played by Brendan Gleeson) deals with the aftermath of a junkie’s fatal accident and welcomes new detective John McBride. They investigate the crime scene and deduce the type of murderer from the evidence, but unfortunately, their thinking processes are completely different. Boyle's quirky mindset leaves McBride utterly confused. They interrogate a suspect together, only to find that he’s just a scapegoat and the real culprit remains at large. Although Boyle is cynical, he is a devoted son, doing everything to bring joy to his ailing mother. To crack down on a $500 million drug smuggling case, FBI agent Wendell (Don Cheadle) begins analyzing the case for the officers but is repeatedly interrupted by Boyle. Just as Boyle is about to be fired, he points out a major flaw in the report—one of the four suspects is already in the morgue. This earns Boyle new respect from Wendell, who finds his racial jokes surprising. When McBride is unexpectedly murdered by a philosophical thug during duty, his wife comes looking for him, making Boyle feel a heavy sense of responsibility. He and Wendell embark on a journey to catch the killer…
