Asha (played by Ondas Besikbasov) returns to the steppe after retiring from the navy and stays in his sister's tent. His brother-in-law introduces him to the last eligible young woman in the area, Tupan. Asha talks excitedly about his experiences at sea in front of her parents, but to his surprise, the girl behind the curtain finds his ears too big. The brother-in-law is very disappointed with Asha's failed matchmaking, and as the female sheep in the flock frequently have difficulties giving birth, Asha, who cannot settle down, is unable to take on the responsibilities of a herder. Unable to endure his brother-in-law's cold demeanor, Asha visits again to propose, but is rejected once more. However, after peeking through the door crack at Tupan, he truly falls in love with the girl.
Life on the steppe is hard and lonely, with news from the radio and his friend Tony often serving as tempting distractions from the outside world. The time for the herders to migrate is approaching, and after a big fight with his brother-in-law, Asha storms out, but he is stopped by a sheep that is having difficulty giving birth...
