The story takes place at the end of the War of Resistance Against Japan (Winter 1944), when a nine-man Japanese army squad is ordered to enter the mountains to find a cave that previously stored biological weapons. At the same time, the only family in the mountains is celebrating the birthday of their grandfather who passed away years ago by slaughtering a pig, while the elderly woman holds her late husband's erhu, reminiscing deeply. Just then, the nine-man squad bursts into the yard and, in a fit of brutality, kills the entire family except for the three sons who managed to escape. After leaving, the Japanese squad finally finds the cave in the back mountain, but they suddenly realize they cannot descend and report back, as the simple Chinese villagers have been enraged by the Japanese soldiers' savagery. The three brothers seek revenge! Thus begins a battle between the three farmer's sons and the nine heavily armed Japanese soldiers. The originally simple villagers utilize their farming tools—big knives, axes, ropes, chopping knives, and iron forks—against the Japanese soldiers' rifles and bayonets, managing to trap the soldiers for nearly two years. They take advantage of their familiarity with the mountainous terrain to keep the Japanese troops confined in the cave until they starve one by one. During these two years, the elder brother died in battle, and the youngest brother perished as well, leaving only the timid Erxi. On the Japanese side, only the extremely cruel Japanese captain remains.
At this moment, the film reaches its climax. The battle has turned into a conflict between just two men. Daily harassment, nightly rock attacks, and evening curses become the themes of the struggle. In this fight, there are no longer farmers and soldiers, only the desire to kill each other. Seasons change; winter turns to spring, autumn to winter. The battle between the two men unfolds daily, with each waking up solely to kill the other. Erxi wants the captain to pay for the lives lost, while the Japanese captain seeks to descend the mountain to complete his mission. As the standoff drags on, two years have already passed, yet their contest continues. It is not until our People's Liberation Army arrives in this village, long thought desolate, that they discover this unique battle still exists. Ultimately, in despair, the Japanese captain commits suicide, while Erxi, crying out "I have finally taken my revenge," is filled with joy.
