In a composition class, Antoine (played by Jean-Pierre Léaud) doodles on an image of a woman passed around by classmates and is punished by being made to stand in the corner. After class, while alone in the classroom, Antoine vents his dissatisfaction by writing poetry on the wall, which only angers the teacher (Guy Decomble) further. In the evening, his mother (Claire Maurier) erupts in anger because Antoine didn’t buy flour, while his stepfather (Albert Rémy) gives him some money for lunch at Antoine's request. The next day, encouraged by his desk mate Renée (Patrick Auffay), Antoine skips school, goes to watch a movie and play games, and sees his mother kissing a man he doesn’t know on the street. On the third day, Antoine returns to school and, in a panic, lies and says his mother has died, gaining the teacher’s forgiveness and pity. However, his stepfather learns about his truancy and, along with his mother, rushes to school, exposing his lie and slapping him in front of the entire class. Antoine decides to leave home and write a letter. But at such a young age, where can he go? Paris is so large, France is so big; where can he find a place to belong?
